Electorate of Arafura :: Angie Siebert & Tristan Mungatopi are the Country Liberals candidates for this electorate.
Angie Siebert
I am a member of the Kunbarllanjnja / Oepelli Community. I was born and educated in Darwin and have worked with the Kunbarllanjnja Community Government Council in various roles for more than ten years. I am currently a member of the West Arnhem Shire Tranisitional Committee.
As an educated indigenous woman I am very fortunate to have lived and learned the lives of aboriginal people and have had an extensive education that enables me to communicate effectively with people from diverse and multicultural backgrounds.
The seven years of Labor Government has seen seven years of inaction on a range of very serious issues confronting the Territory. Now more than ever we need a comprehensive plan to tackle rising crime, falling education standards and substandard healthcare.
Tristan Mungatopi
I am a Tiwi Islander and have worked as a Youth Development Officer, council Project Coordinator and ATSI Liaison Officer.
Currently I work with the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne as an Indigenous Education Officer and a Project Officer with the Catholic Commission for Justice, Development and Peace.
As a Tiwi Islander and through my work I have gained the ability to effectively analyse and assess the needs of rural and islander communities regardless of background and I believe I can apply these skills to being an effective voice for the people of Arafura.
Angie and Tristan believe the Territory faces challenges in the following areas:
Crime: Too many Territorians are now afraid for their safety on our streets at any time of the day or night. With violent crime up 83% since 2001, it is time we had a firm but fair approach to policing, crime and law and order.
Education: The Territory lags well behind the rest of the country in school test results and our performance is getting worst. To improve we need the best teachers available and that means making our most valuable teachers the best paid in the country.
Health: With painfully long waiting times at Emergency Departments in our hospitals and for elective surgery, we need much better value for money from our health dollar
Cost of living: Doing the shopping, renting a home or putting petrol in the car are really expensive in the Territory. Simply, Governments can and should do whatever they can to alleviate the pressure on household budgets.
Economy: We need a Government prepared to invest the proceeds of the mining boom back into infrastructure across the Territory. Wise investment now will help secure our future prosperity.
Environment: The Territory is one of the world’s last great frontiers. We need to balance the need for access to our immensely beautifullandscape with policies to protect what makes the Territory so unique.
The Future: A great future awaits the Territory but we need to get the policies right. The Country Liberals will deliver a new direction and real action.
