A recent surge in the price of Liquid Petroleum Gas is another impost eating away at Territory household budgets.

Opposition Leader, Terry Mills, said the price of a litre of LPG has increased by about 20 per cent in the past two months.

“I understand the price of a litre of LPG increased by about 10 cents in January and six cents in February,” Mr Mills said.

“The average price is around $1.04 a litre in Darwin and $1.12 in Alice Springs compared with 90 cents in Perth and about 60 cents in Victoria.

“In addition to the cost of petrol, which has increased over the past week and is expected to rise even further, the LPG hike is another extra expense for Territorians.

“Every time you fill up the bottle for the family BBQ, LPG converted car or kitchen cooker you’re paying more.

“Governments can pressure fuel wholesalers to pass on reductions in prices at the pump, encourage competition and maintain a watching brief on costs – but the free market determines what consumers pay for petrol or LPG.

“What Government can do is support policies that don’t jack up prices – and this is where the Henderson Labor Government has failed dismally.

“The Government’s land release policies have left Territorians paying the highest capital city rents in the country and first-home buyers facing the country’s second highest house prices behind Sydney.

“Labor has introduced a container recycling scheme that has increased the price of a carton of beer by up to $15 and thrown its weight behind a Commonwealth carbon tax which will also increase costs.

“If elected to Government, the Country Liberals will make the impact of policy changes on family budgets a priority.”
